H1N1/Swine Flu: Hey, Remember Me?

March 17, 2010

Examining the latest statistics, WebMD's Daniel J. DeNoon finds that although a third wave of H1N1/swine flu doesn't appear to be on the horizon, there still were an estimated "2 million new cases of H1N1 swine flu, causing 18,000 hospitalizations, and about 310 deaths" from mid-January to mid-February 2010.

Here's an except from the story:

Although 2 million new cases in a month seems like a lot, the cumulative estimates are growing much more slowly. This is consistent with reports from state and local health departments suggesting only sporadic cases popping up in most of the nation. Only in the Deep South and in Maine were regional outbreaks continuing last week.

Flu pandemics often come in waves, and there's no guarantee that the U.S. won't see a new wave of infections. The CDC is still advising people to get their H1N1 swine flu vaccine.

What's happening in your community? Is anyone still getting immunized for H1N1/swine flu? What are local health care providers doing with any leftover vaccine?

I have no idea what health care providers are doing with the left-over vaccine, but I can tell you what they aren't doing in my circle - they aren't innoculating themselves.

In my particular experience, I work with approximately three dozen hospitals. Just out of curiosity, I've taken an informal poll, and my personal findings are that about 38% of the critical care nurses thought the H1N1 vaccine was a good idea; about 10% of the ER & ICU doctors. I know of very few paramedics who would have anything to do with it. Their reasoning? No confidence in the drug companies providing it; high skepticism of the "pandemic" as advertised; unconvinced that this particular strain was lethal.

My own personal view is that blanket vaccines eliminate natures ability to develop natural protections. I suspect the end result - on the wide scale - will prove that this course of action is a huge mistake.
