I'm on the phone with journalist Mark Johnson and he is rummaging through his desk. He's recently won the Pulitzer Prize and is now sharing his list of health and science references. Last week, Johnson's reporter partner, Kathleen Gallagher, talked to Career GPS about her career before and after winning the Pulitzer Prize with Johnson. This week, Johnson talks about the series "One in a Billion: A boy's life, a medical mystery," that put them in the spotlight.

What does it take to be a good science writer?

The new Wellcome Trust Science Writing Prize 2011 is a challenge to non-professional writers -- anyone who hasn't written for money -- to write 800-word articles that might be published in The Guardian or The Observor. The contest is great incentive for scientists and new writers across the pond, but what is great about the contest for those of us in the United States and elsewhere is the "Secrets of Good Science Writing" feature The Guardian launched this month to encourange entrants. This week in Career GPS, we're highlighting some of the series' most poignant lessons so far and listing the newest job and educational opportunities in health media.

Online chat with Dr. David Satcher on health reform and health disparities

On Thursday, Bay Area News Group (Contra Costa Times, Oakland Tribune, etc.) hosted a live online chat with Dr. David Satcher, former U.S. Surgeon General, and Rich Hamburg, deputy director of Trust for America's Health. Health reporter Sandy Kleffman and I (the science reporter for the chain) moderated it.  

Both men responded to questions posted by participants on how Congressional health reform legislation offers an unprecedented amount of funds for disease prevention, and funds for novel programs to improve health by improving neighborhoods. It's archived at:
