HealthyCal.org: New Site Melds Journalism, Community Around Health Issues

Veteran journalist Dan Weintraub today launches a new website dedicated to helping Californians better understand and talk about public health and community health, broadly defined. Supported by The California Endowment, the state’s largest health philanthropy (which also supports ReportingonHealth), HealthyCal.org will also examine land use, transportation, poverty, food and criminal justice issues as they relate to health.

Reporting on Social Inequities: A Brainstorming Session

Kip Wiley

Kip Wiley is a policy consultant for the California State Senate's Office of Research, a bipartisan government office that develops and evaluates public-policy initiatives for the California State Senate. Wiley is responsible for researching and developing policies and advising Senate members, staff and committees on issues related to food, agriculture, natural resources, wildlife, ocean and coastal resources, air quality, groundwater contamination including contamination by MTBE and chromium VI, parks and recreation, seismic safety, transportation, and sport and commercial fishing.

Daniel McFadden

McFadden is director of UC Berkeley's Econometrics Laboratory, and his current research focuses on the economic status of the elderly and the adequacy of their housing arrangements, financial planning and the delivery and cost of health services. His research has had profound effects on public policy issues including alternative modes of transportation, electricity usage, attitudes about clean air initiatives and regulation. In addition to winning the Nobel Prize, he was awarded the prestigious Nemmers Prize in economics from Northwestern University in 2000.

Dan Sperling

Dan Sperling, an international authority on automobile emissions, air quality and transportation policy, has co-authored a series of five reports on transport-sector air pollution in developing countries. Sperling writes that without new measures, greenhouse gas emissions from transportation in the developing world will exceed those in the industrialized world sometime after 2010. Many of the strategies that could reduce those emissions would also address the more immediate problems of local air pollution, access to basic transportation and infrastructure financing pressures.
