Dr. Bernard Lo is a professor of medicine and director of the program in medical ethics at the University of Californa, San Francisco. He is national program director for the Greenwall Faculty Scholars Program in Bioethics and a member of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) council. He serves on the Recombinant DNA Advisory Committee at National Institutes of Health, which reviews gene transfer protocols. From 1996 to 2001, he served as a member of the National Bioethics Advisory Committee. From 1997 to 2001, Lo chaired the expert panel convened by the American College of Physicians to develop clinical, ethical and policy recommendations regarding care near the end of life. He developed a course on responsible conduct of research that 120 UCSF postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty take each year. His research has addressed decisions about life-sustaining interventions, confidentiality in the computer era, ethical issues in HIV prevention research and ethical issues in international clinical trials. He is the author of \"Resolving Ethical Dilemmas in Clinical Practice: A Guide for Clinicians,\" a comprehensive textbook on clinical ethics. He practices general internal medicine and teaches medicine.
