Catherine J. Ertz-Berger is executive director of the Contra Costa Child Care Council, a nonprofit organization offering a variety of child care programs and services to residents of Contra Costa County. Through area offices in Richmond, Concord and Antioch, and a satellite office in Brentwood, the council helps parents find the best child care placement for their child and family. To make referrals, the Child Care Council maintains information on more than 1,800 licensed caregivers. Trained resource and referral counselors assist parents in need of child care by identifying child care programs near the parent's desired area, providing information on the different types of child care options, and equipping parents with information to make an informed child care selection. The Council assists parents with consultation on specific parenting concerns, maintains resource libraries for parents and develops parent support and leadership groups. The Child Care Council also educates decision makers and the general public about child care trends and issues.
