Jack Cheevers
Biography
Jack Cheevers is the communications director for Region 9 of the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the federal agency responsible for administering Medicare, Medicaid, State Children's Health Insurance (SCHIP), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), and several other health-related programs. Cheevers oversees communications in Region 9, which covers California, Arizona, Nevada, Hawaii and the Pacific Trust territories. He previously worked as a staff writer for the Los Angeles Times, the Oakland Tribune, the Associated Press and United Press International in San Francisco. He also served as the managing editor of two alternative papers, the SF Weekly in San Francisco and the defunct New Times Los Angeles. A political science graduate of UC Berkeley, he is writing a book on the seizure of an American spy ship, USS Pueblo, by North Korea in 1968.
