Melissa Stafford Jones is vice president of the California Association of Public Hospitals and Health Systems, or CAPH, a nonprofit trade organization representing California's public hospitals and health systems since 1983. CAPH works to strengthen the capacity of its members to advance community health, ensure access to comprehensive, high-quality, culturally sensitive health care services for all Californians and educate the next generation of health care professionals. CAPH's belief that everyone deserves an equal opportunity to enjoy good health -- regardless of their insurance status, immigration status or ability to pay -- drives its policy and advocacy agenda. CAPH represents 30 hospitals, health care systems and academic medical centers in 17 California counties, including each of the 15 most populated counties. Among the members of CAPH are county-owned and operated facilities, University of California medical centers, and private, nonprofit facilities sharing a common commitment to serving all people. As teaching hospitals, they also train more than half of the new doctors in the state.
