Patricia Churchland is a professor emeritus of philosophy at the University of California at San Diego. She is a former department chairwoman and leading scholar in the fields of neuroscience, philosophy, and consciousness. Ms. Churchland combines these disciplines to create a unique scholarly approach to the study of the mind-brain, "neurophilosophy." With regard to new medical technologies, she has observed that public concerns often are far greater than the eventual reality justifies. She has written about the need for full ethical oversight in medical research and is available to comment on the bioethical issues involved in the evolution of stem cell science.
